We have been raising registered black Angus since 1998. Like many others in the Bulkley Valley we got our start with a heifer from my parents, Frank & Dianne Strimbold of Poplar Meadows Angus. We ran the heifer with the commercial herd for the first few years and got our first registered calf in 1998. Mom and Dad gave us another heifer in 1998 as well and we were up to 3 head! We recently ran a tally of all the descendants, commercial and registered, of the old 12B cow and we have 40 head on the place. We still have the old 12B cow and she is in remarkably good shape with great feet and a good udder! She is a granddaughter of Camilla Chance 37T 'Canadian Colossal'.
We have 27 purebreds to calve in 2007. We ranch with Brent's parents as well. They run 75 commercial cows and keep yearlings over. For the first few years we were able to use the herdsires of my parents and in 2001 we purchased our own herdsire from Peak Dot Ranch. We chose Peak Dot because we really liked their theory on raising cattle. They are a big operation and don't have time to deal with bad udders or feet! We purchased another bull from them in 2005, Peak Dot Hobson 114P. He is a Stevenson Bruno son out of a HF Young Gun daughter. We are VERY impressed with his calves. They are long, thick and attractive.
We have 2 kids that help us out. Shea has black Angus and Tori has her own herd of red Angus. We have a very busy life. Brent hauls logs, gravel and/or runs his excavator and I sell Real Estate. The kids are involved in 4-H, hockey, soccer and gymkhanas. Due to lack of time we are trying to raise no fuss, easy doing, trouble free cattle!
